Well, I appreciate a couple of friends who came to watch Eurovision with me. But it had a crapé outcome. I suppose, if you love super high male voices from opera, you were thrilled. I am not and was not. JJ is a Filipino-Austrian with a fantastic voice. His song was performed over the top, as it should be. I just didn't like it. It was like watching The Flight of the Valkyries performed on a sinking ship. All it missed was Elmer Fudd trying to kill the wabbit.
Here is how the NY Times summed it up, quicker than I could.
JJ, a 24-year-old whose real name is Johannes Pietsch, is a countertenor, meaning that his vocal range most closely matches that of a female mezzo-soprano. He sings in the choir at the Opera School of the Vienna State Opera, and in recent months has appeared onstage in the company’s productions of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and Benjamin Britten’s “Billy Budd.”
Here is how I would describe it.
