The Day to Day we have accepted

The following doesn't mean I am crazy, going nuts, or being paranoid; it is more observational. We are all okay with this, or we accept it.

One of the weird responses we in America are having right now is the ability to accept things we thought we never would. I don't mean the "first they came for the Jews..." thing, although that too, with the trans-rights. But things have slowly evolved, and we now accept them as usual.

Like:

  • Old Belief: The Supreme Court is neutral
  • New Reality: The Supreme Court is a tool in the Republican takeover of the Judicial Branch of the government.
    • The Supreme Court granted Donald Trump immunity for any illegal actions.
    • The Supreme Court moves V E R Y slowly and delays decisions that harm freedom but support Republican views, impacting justice negatively.

  • Old Belief: The Constitution is the law of the land.
  • New Reality: The Constitution is an impediment to be ignored
    • Ignore the 14th amendment on citizenship
    • Ignore the 1st amendment on freedom of the press
    • Ignore the 1st amendment, an individual's freedom of speech
    • Ignore the Emoluments Clause and allow the President to benefit from donors.
    • Proposed to ignore the 25th Amendment and run for a 3rd term.

  • Old Belief: Bribery was illegal
  • New Reality: No, it's not.
    • This arises directly from the Supreme Court decisions that, unless a bribe is written out as such, there is no quid pro quo. (Seriously*)

  • Old Belief: Science is right and vaccines are good
  • New Belief: Science is irrelevant and vaccines are bad
    • The Secretary of Health and Human Services hasn't addressed a measles outbreak except to say it's not so bad.

These aren't crazy fears of what might happen. These are just realities now, and we all accept them.

In a June 2024 ruling in Snyder v. United States, the Supreme Court held that 18 U.S.C. § 666 (a federal bribery statute) only criminalizes quid pro quo bribery, meaning a payment or benefit offered or accepted with the understanding it will influence a specific official act. The court clarified that Section 666 does not apply to after-the-fact gratuities or gifts given as a token of appreciation without a prior agreement to influence an official act.
