The fact that he came out is big news. But for me, the bigger news is two-fold. First, he made his statement the highlighted the fact that being gay doesn't define who you are. Being gay is as much a piece of us as being straight is for you, and that is not that big a deal. Being straight doesn't make people inherently better or worse, just like being blond doesn't make people better or worse (they have more fun, but that's it).
This is a great summary of how so many of us feel. And we come out mainly to be honest with our families and to help those that come after us.
