Three surprisingly lovely Churches: Untraditional

Architizer, the website, has posted a decades worth of award winning religious buildings, getting ready for the nominations this year. They are all interesting, but 3 of them are gorgeous to me in super odd ways they convey the resident church. The story is here, the ones I love are repeated below.

Capilla del Lago

This is a church in Argentina. Actually it is not a church but an "ecumenical chapel" in a residential area that functions as a church for the residents. It is an open concept facing the water. It is designed to bring the form of a church; alter, spires, a roof and add the open view to the lake and nature. It is not very Catholic in a catholic country, but it is well thought out. And beautiful.

The Autobahn Church

On the autobahn in Wilnsdorf Germany, sits a church. From the outside, it is no great shakes, I think. But the inside is gorgeous. There are no interior windows, so during the day, the only light comes from transparent roofs in the two spires.

Being a Church on the freeway means it is designed to be a sanctuary open to all. So, as you see, very little adornment in the actually chapel.

The Dysis Church of the Poly Shallow Sea

This is in Sanya China. It is fascinating and odd, all at the same time. So, let's start with the coolest feature, the "floating church". The same chapel (very small and it seems like the only place3 to hold services) sits in a shallow pool of water that reflects the sky inside.

Moreover, the entrance (through the taller piece, the "bell tower") opens to a bridge over the water., part of the bridge can then be retracted and the entire chapel can rotate to follow sunrises or sunsets. It allows the church to be used by different religions, some where the sun plays an important part in ritual.

The meeting rooms, offices and power is in the base of the building.
