If we can put solar panels in orbit, not on the ground, AND transmit electricity down in a cost efficient way, we can move most electrical generation off the planet.You wouldn't need coal or nuclear to create electricity. For most modes of transportation, you would not need oil either.
You might need it to make plastics, but we are already powering cars with electricity. The prices of solar panels are dropping. Hell, we even use solar panels to make electricity on the space station.
