An Oasis in the City

This is an oasis in the middle of Palm Springs.

What blows me away is that this is about a mile from our house, and I've never seen it. Ed and I were walking (yes - we are old, we walk now every day) through an old golf course that has been abandoned for years and is now turning into a nature preserve. I have made fun of this because so far the "nature preserve" is a mess of dirt and weeds, with palm trees where the golf course was.

But it turns out that isn't all. There are 3 ponds like this. You can't go near them because of the dense palms surrounding them and the big signs saying "don't enter." The one above has a bridge that allows walking from one side to the other. The two others are glimpsed from the walkway.

I assume that these were nature oases (plural of oasis) that have now been augmented with public water and hidden recirculation to keep the number of mosquitoes down. They are a super surprise in this area. I guess these oases on the western flyway are critical to migrating birds. You can see egrets (and turtles) in the middle platform.

It was very cool.

On return Eddie took a picture of this roadrunner in our complex.
