Fourth of July is when America celebrates America.
And I mean that in the best possible way. Our national motto is e pluribus unum : Out of Many, One.
This means many things to us. Originally it meant that all of the separate states, all the separate religions and all the separate places of origin, combine to make the United States.
Later, it mean that all the peoples emigrating into the country become part of the American melting pot.
Now (to me) it means that many of us identify as part of our sub-groups AND more importantly as Americans. I think some people are trying to divide us. Seeing extra identity and supporting some (Asian-Americans, German-Americans) and deciding others are anti-American (Gay Americans, Mexican-Americans). Me, I support a melting pot of people and ideas. And, we Americans have to figure out how to come together.
The actual Gaseden Flag ("Don't Tread on Me") is an example not of coming apart, but of the snake being comprised of multiple states. Somehow, we need to get back to that ideal.

Despite the evil that seems to be rampant, I will not let hate, anger, and greed destroy my faith in what we stand for or my belief it will not overcome us. I am happy I'm an American and am grateful for those who have and are fighting the "good fight."
