And Now For a Little Good News

 Puffins...

Apparently I don't have to go back to the Faroe Islands to cruz out to see puffins. Up in Maine they tried, unsuccessfully, for years to reintroduce Puffins to an island they had once populated. But the flock had been hunted to extinction in the 1800s. They introduced puffin chicks, which were succesfully, but never came back. They went elsewhere to breed.

So a local conservationist, Stephen Kress, had an idea. If Puffin are social birds, maybe they won't come back until they see other puffins. So he made puffins dummies, and broadcasted puffin calls and voila. Puffins! Over 1300 hundred last year with over 200 breeding pairs. link

Sometimes I despair at age. But this gives me hope.

I mean, I don't want a child, but I think she is older than Tony Randel. Unlike Tony, she pushed this out!
