Bill Barr is the United States' Attorney General. Now, in normal times, that means that he represents the United States first, and the Administration second in legal dealings. Before AG Barr, the Attorney General almost always interprets the law and Constitution with a slant towards the current Administration's view - but still in keeping with the law.
Janet Reno for Clinton, John Ashcroft for Bush the Younger, Eric Holder for Obama - all of those Attorney Generals made choices that were controversial and sided with their Presidents, but were almost always lawful. Bill Barr, like most Trump appointees, has taken his power and corrupted it beyond recognition. Worse, Barr is smart.
We shall ignore the past where he summarized Muller's report as clearing Trump (it didn't) and the Senate Report as finding no fault with the President (it did). But in the last week or so his general toading to Princess Tiny Hands has turned positively repugnant.
First, in an interview with CNN, he was asked for proof that voter fraud is prevalent with mail-in voting. He spoke of a Texas case where 1700 fraudulent votes were cast. That was the accusation at the start of the investigation. But the investigation (a few years ago, so we know how it turned out) was that there was no fraud at all.
Second, in an interview with a different news channel, in response to President Trump's illegal invocation for North Carolina Republicans to vote twice, he said he didn't know if it was legal to vote twice in some states or not. In fact, there is a US Law (remember he is the US' Chief Lawyer), not a state law, that it is illegal to vote more than once in an election.
Third, he stated that streets are "safer" after White Nationalists vigilantes have killed protesters, at the President's urging.
Fourth, he has suggested that foreign powers will try to effect our voting if done by mail (as states have done for decades). When asked for proof - the stock in trade of Attorneys - he said, "it's just logical". That is not, just so we all understand, how this shit works.
This is since last week.
Our country was not designed to withstand this authoritarian attack by one party. It is not that most Republicans approve of this, but none will actually step-up to stop it.
The lone voice in government that is raising an alarm reliably is Mitt Romney, Mormon Senator from Utah. The man I definitely gave the short shrift to when he ran for President. I apologize. I still think Obama was the better choice, but I would give my left testicle to have him as President now over Trump these last 3.5 years.
Mitt, I'm sorry. Honestly.
It's hard to say whose the bigger threat: Trump, Barr, or McConnell. Together they are truly a nightmare.
